When No One’s Watching is a blues song about the ‘behind the scenes’ parts of our character—the moments that don’t make it onto social media posts.

This song came from a place I suspect many people will recognise. Life goes through seasons, and recently mine has felt like one of those stretches where circumstances just seem to stack against you. You can’t seem to move forward, progress feels elusive, and whatever you try just doesn’t seem to work. I’m sure you know the feeling…

It’s in those moments that I find myself watching people. Not in a strange way — just noticing. And what I’ve noticed is this: you really do see who someone is when things aren’t going their way. When they come last or when they’re told they’re wrong. Some people take it on the chin and wish others well. Others don’t.

The image that kept coming back to me was a very personal one. I have a horse called Copper, and anyone who owns horses knows that lameness is just part of the deal — frustrating, disheartening, and often at the most inconvenient time. There have been times when Copper’s been out of action and I’ve stood at the yard watching other people load up their trailers and head out riding without me; and I’ve had to ask myself honestly — how do I respond to that? Do I feel genuinely happy for them, or does something smaller and uglier creep in?

For me, the answer is usually, good for them — I hope that’s me again soon. But I’ve noticed that’s not everyone’s response. Some people almost seem to take comfort when others are struggling too, as though other people’s bad luck takes the edge off their own. That’s really where the song came from , the question:

When everyone’s out riding and your horse is lame — do you smile for them, or let envy remain?

This song is really me talking to myself as much as anyone. The kind of person I want to be. Someone who holds their hands up when they’re wrong, who forgives rather than keeps score, who can shake hands after losing and mean it. Because anyone can be generous and upbeat when life’s going well and the wins are coming. That costs nothing and tells you nothing. It’s how you think, and how you behave, when things are hard — when no one’s watching, when there’s nothing to gain from it — that’s where you find out what you’re actually made of.

On the music production side — I write the lyrics and develop the basic song structure and melodic ideas myself. But in all honesty: I’m not a multi-instrumentalist, and session musicians cost money I don’t have. So I use AI tools to help me build the full sound, and I make no apology for that. Some musicians and purists find that uncomfortable, and I understand why. But for me it’s simple — it’s the only way I can get the creative ideas in my head out into the world. The tools don’t write the song. They just help me realise it. This one ended up as a blues-tinged track — guitar-led with some Hammond organ sitting quietly underneath and a few slide guitar accents that I think give it a soulful, honest feel that suits the subject matter.

I hope it resonates with you. And next time life’s being difficult and it feels like everyone else is riding while your horse is lame — I hope you smile for them 😁.

When No One’s Watching Lyrics

(Verse 1)
Watch someone when they get the corner office,
Watch when the crowd is cheering their name.
It’s easy wearing a smile when you’re the winner,
But who are you when life stops playing your game?
I’ve seen them take the glory without blinking,
Then crumble at the first sign of pain.

(Pre-Chorus)
Because anyone can shine when the sun’s out,
And anyone can laugh when there’s nothing to doubt
But what are you made of when the light falls away?

(Chorus)
When everyone’s out riding and your horse is lame,
Do you smile for them, or let envy remain?
Do you wish them well and wave them down the road,
Or let bitterness become your heavy load?
When you come in last, when you’re told you’re wrong,
Do you build others up, or let the envy smoulder on?
This is where character is made or broken plain
When everyone’s out riding, and your horse is lame.

(Verse 2)
I want to be the one who says I’m sorry,
Not too proud to hold my hands up when I’m wrong.
I want to be the first to offer forgiveness,
Not keeping score of every slight and every wrong.
They say the small things always tell the story
The handshake after losing still rings true.
It’s not the trophies on the mantlepiece that matter
It’s who you are when no one’s watching you.

(Bridge)
It costs nothing to build someone up,
But takes everything not to pull them down.
When the whole world’s galloping and you’re left behind
That’s the moment you’re found.
