My Truest Friend is a deeply personal song, written in memory of our family dog, Mason.
He was part of our family for many years — not just a pet, but a constant presence in our lives. Like many people, I’ve grown up with dogs and other animals, and they bring a kind of companionship that is simple, loyal, and unwavering. They give everything they have, without question.
The difficult truth is that they don’t stay with us long enough.
This song reflects on that loss — not just the moment itself, but the quiet that follows. The empty spaces, the habits that remain, and the memories that return when you least expect them. It’s about coming to terms with the fact that the loss never truly goes away; we simply learn to live alongside it.
Writing and recording this song wasn’t easy. I found it emotionally raw (i.e. I ended up crying), particularly when recording the vocals, but in many ways the process has helped me to grieve. It felt important to finish it and to say something that is honest.
Although this song comes from loosing Mason, it will mean something different to anyone who has loved and lost a dog or any much-loved pet. In that sense, it is not just a reflection, but also a small tribute — to him, and to all those animals that become such an important part of our lives.
Musically, it is a simple piano-led ballad, intended to let the feeling and the words speak for themselves.

Song Title Lyrics
(Verse 1)
A cold spot on the sofa, a silence at the door
I still hear the phantom rhythm, of paws upon the floor
Ten years gone in a heartbeat, a lifetime in a blink
It’s a lonesome kind of quiet, when I stop to sit and think.
(Chorus)
Oh, they give us all they’ve got to give
then they leave us far too soon
Now I’m tracing dusty memories by the light of a lonely moon
There’s a hole inside my spirit that I know will never mend
But I’d do it all a thousand times to have back my truest friend.
(Verse 2)
You greeted every morning, like the world was brand and new
No matter how the rain fell, I could count on finding you
But the clock, it keeps on ticking, and the seasons pull away
Now I’m left to keep the promise, of the love that’s here to stay.
(Chorus)
Oh, they give us all they’ve got to give
then they leave us far too soon
Now I’m tracing dusty memories by the light of a lonely moon
There’s a hole inside my spirit that I know will never mend
But I’d do it all a thousand times to have back my truest friend.
(Bridge)
It’s a tear because I miss you
and a smile because you were mine
The brightest stars in all the sky
are the ones that briefly shine.
The house is quiet now.
The walk is long
and still I’ll love you till the sun goes down…
I always, always will
